5 romantic London locations for the perfect first date

When looking for somewhere to take a new beau, it can be tough finding that perfect place. From classy restaurants to somewhere fun and unusual, the city is full of hidden gems, so here are five romantic spots for first dates in London that are sure to impress.

1. The Alchemist

Tucked away down a side-street near Covent Garden, The Alchemist is a bar like no other. The  drinks are magical concoctions, scientific experiments and mystical potions. A popular favourite is the Butter Beer; shimmering, golden, smoking and bubbling yet somehow still chilled. The food is a  wonderful experience, from stunning starters through to divine desserts, such as the candy floss  baked Alaska, served flambéed. At reasonable prices, considering the location, The Alchemist is a treat for all the senses and sure to impress a date.

2. Greenwich Park

Greenwich is a treasure trove for first date potential. The National Maritime Museum and the Royal  Observatory, although fascinating, might not be best suited for romantic first dates. Instead, take a  wander through Greenwich market, exploring the many food and craft stalls there. Greenwich park  is the perfect place to have a picnic, with hills that give breathtaking views over the whole of London.

3. The Diner

For a more fun and laidback date, The Diner offers a range of tasty American-style food and drinks,  including “hard shakes” – milkshakes with alcohol. With a number of Diners across London, it’s  easy to find a location that works for you and your date. Casual, comfortable, and with the low lighting keeping things romantic, The Diner is a great first date location.

4. South Bank

The south side of the Thames is perfect for strolling along with a date. Although usually packed with tourists, head past the book market for some peace and quiet. Take a walk by the river, catch a play at the Globe or the National Theatre, stop by the Tate Modern to show off your art knowledge, and grab a bite to eat at one of the many restaurants and bars that line the South Bank. There are also frequently a number of pop-up food and drink stalls, along with temporary outdoor exhibitions in the summer.

5. Barbican Centre Courtyard

A hidden gem in the heart of the city, the courtyard at the Barbican Centre is where urban  architecture and nature become one. Follow the yellow arrows on the ground from Barbican  underground station to the back of the Barbican Centre, and you will discover a concrete paradise. Lined by Brutalist flats brimming with colourful flower-boxes, the courtyard is open and spacious, with benches, picnic tables, fountains, a stream running through it, leading to a pond that almost resembles a lake with a small waterfall flowing down into it. Sit by the water and get to know each other, and if the weather is less than favourable, head inside to see a play or explore the many works of art also housed in the Centre, or even visit their temporary conservatory. Romantic and beautiful, the Barbican courtyard is the ideal first date location.
